USPS Hacked, 800,000 Employee Records Stolen

USPS has become the latest victim in the ongoing cyberwar. According to an article by the Washington Post, the intrusion was first discovered in mid-September.

Officials stated that the attack was carried out by a “sophisticated actor who did not appear to be interested in identity theft or credit card fraud.”

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe stated that they have no evidence to suggest that the compromised data was used in any malicious manner. He also claimed that they are currently taking steps to protect the USPS employees from any potential misuse of the stolen data. The report indicates that social security numbers, addresses, telephone numbers, and more, of over 800,000 USPS employees were compromised. So far, there is no evidence of any credit card numbers being stolen.

According to the report, it appears that Chinese hackers are behind the attack. China, meanwhile, denies any cyberespionage accusations. Former NSA general counsel Stewart A. Baker said China should be embarrassed and punished for being in our systems.

It’s the case that the U.S. and Russia and other countries are much more cautious about getting caught because they think there are going to be consequences. It’s only the Chinese that think there are no consequences to getting caught.
