Did You Get a FedEx Package Text? It’s a Scam!

Did You Get a FedEx Package Text It’s a Scam!

If you recently received a text notifying you that your FedEx package has been delivered, it could be a scam! The text is deceiving because it uses your real name and shows a purported “tracking code” with a link and also provides the option for you to set your package delivery preferences. Look again before clicking on this link!

Clicking on the text message link will direct you to a fake Amazon listing and then lead you to what appears to be an Amazon customer satisfaction survey. After the brief survey, you will be offered a free gift and be prompted to fill personal information and a credit card number.

To make sure such texts are authentic, go to the main FedEx website and search the tracking number on the text. If you put in the code on the FedEx website, you can verify that there was no such package. Another indicator of a scam text could be a slightly misspelled name or website address such as fedx.com or fed-ex.com. Unexpected messages that request money for delivery of packages or immediate action threatening account suspension are also signs of a scam. If you have received such a suspicious text or email, FedEx advises to report it to abuse@fedex.com and delete the message without it being opened.

FedEx assured that it “does not request, via unsolicited mail, email, or SMS messages, payment or personal information in return for goods in transit or in FedEx custody.”

These type of text scams are called “smishing” scams, derived from combining “SMS” with “texting” and “phishing.” Another infamous smishing scam occurred in 2018 targeting Fifth Third Bank customers in Ohio. The scam messaged customers that there were now cardless ATMs that would allow them to get cash using their mobile phones, and prompted them to fill out their username and password information. 125 customers were scammed and the scammers stole $106,000.

As with anything, if something seems too good to be true or you are not aware of signing up for the messaged action and are prompted to give your personal information, there is a good chance that it is a scam. Always take a step back and check that messages you received are legitimate and from a legitimate source before responding.
