The Russian government has fended off some 25 million cyber attacks during this year’s World Cup, Russian president Vladimir Putin has been quoted as saying.

The 2018 World Cup in Russia, a hugely successful sporting event which put the spotlight on the country, has bought with it a barrage of cyberattacks targeting Russia’s information infrastructure, Reuters reports.

Altogether, the country prevented nearly 25 million cyberattacks and other criminal acts targeting its IT infrastructure, the Kremlin quoted President Vladimir Putin as saying.

The statement was made during Putin’s meeting with the security council for the World Cup on Sunday evening, within hours after the tournament ended with France beating Croatia in a thrilling final.

Russia, commonly seen as the instigator of several notable cyberattacks including the DNC hack of 2016 has been at the center of accusations for a number of state-sponsored attacks and its alleged role in meddling with the most recent U.S. presidential elections, won by Republican nominee Donald Trump.
