Adidas Warns U.S. Customers of Data Breach That Could Affect Millions

In a consumer warning, sporting retail giant Adidas has alerted its U.S. customers of a data breach that could compromise users’ personal information.

Mainstream reports have suggested that millions of customers could be at risk as a result of the data security incident which Adidas claims it was first made aware of on June 26th. In a rather brief statement, the footwear giant said it is reaching out to alert “certain consumers” who made purchases on Adidas’ U.S. website.

“On June 26th [Tuesday], adidas became aware that an unauthorized party claims to have acquired limited data associated with certain adidas consumers,” the company said in a notice.

Subsequently, the company added it is working with “leading data security firms and law enforcement’ agencies to conduct an investigation into the breach. A preliminary forensic investigation has revealed that the impact has been restricted to “limited data” that includes customers’ usernames, encrypted passwords and contact information.

The company added:

Adidas has no reason to believe that any credit card or fitness information of those consumers was impacted.

Pointedly, the company said it is continuing to undertake a “thorough forensic review”. The incident joins a long list of data breaches impacting major corporations including Adidas competitor Under Armour confirmed a massive data breach of its MyFitnessPal app that has impacted over 150 million user accounts.
