Pizza chain Pizaa Hut was hacked on October 1st and October 2nd this month with hackers stealing customers’ credit and debit cards leading to multiple instances of identity theft.
According to the Lexington Herald, there have been multiple instances of customers seeing their bank accounts getting drained and credit cards charged following a compromise at pizza Hut. According to a customer notice from Pizza Hut, customers who placed an order on its website or mobile app between the morning of October 1 and midday October 2 might have had their details compromised.
The pizza chain said the “temporary security intrusion” lasted for 28 hours, with compromised data including customer names, delivery addresses, email addresses and payment card information. Essentially, all card details including their corresponding account numbers, expiration dates and CVV numbers were all compromised.
A call center operator reportedly told the publication that 60,000 people across the U.S. were affected.
In a notice sent out to affected customers, Pizza Hut stated:
The security intrusion at issue impacted a small percentage of our customers and we estimate that less than one percent of the visits to our website over the course of the relevant week were affected. That said, we regret to say that we believe your information is among the impacted group.
Pizza Hut is offering affected customers free credit monitoring for a year.
Pizza Hut’s director of communications Doug Terfehr stated:
We take the privacy and security of our customers very seriously and invest in resources to protect the customer information in our care. We value the trust our customers place in us and while we were able to address this incident quickly, we regret that this happened and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
For some customers, the damage has been done.
