Hackers have broken into a high-profile plastic surgeon in London to steal a cache of sensitive photos from a clinic that caters to celebrities and even royals, according to the group.
In a report by the Daily Beast, infamous cybercriminal group The Dark Overlord has struck its latest target – a high-profile London-based plastic surgery clinic frequented by celebrities. The hacker group have extorted a number of victims in the past, including medical centers, schools and even a production studio affiliated with Netflix.
In a statement, the London Bridge Plastic Surgery (LBPS), which describes itself as “one of the leading plastic surgery clinics in the UK”, stated:
We can confirm that the Clinic has been the victim of a cyber attack. We took measures to block the attack immediately in order to protect patient information and we informed the Metropolitan Police who launched an investigation…Regrettably, following an investigation by our IT experts and the police, we believe that our security was breached and that data has been stolen. We are still working to establish exactly what data has been compromised.
To prove their claim, the hacker group contacted the publication through an email account belonging to the clinic. The malicious group also sent a cache of photos of LBPS operations.
‘Many are highly graphic and close-up, showing surgery on male and female genitalia. Others show apparent patients’ bodies post-operation, and some include faces,’ the Daily Beast reported. ‘None of a selection of tested photos returned any matches from Google reverse image searches, implying that they were indeed obtained from a private source. ‘
The clinic’s PR firm did not comment on whether the hackers had been in touch with the clinic for any extortion demands. The hackers, meanwhile, claim that the stolen data includes graphic photos of celebrities and high-profile people.
“We have TBs [terabytes] of this s**t. Databases, names, everything,” a member of The Dark Overlord told The Daily Beast. “There are some royal families in here.”
The group added:
We’re going to pitch it all up for everyone to nab. The entire patient list with corresponding photos. The world has never seen a medical dump of a plastic surgeon to such degree.
