FBI is Investigating Cyberattack Against Democratic Congressional Group

A report has revealed that the FBI is investigating a cyberattack against the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee or DCCC, following an earlier hack against the Democratic National Committee (DNC) which saw WikiLeaks publish some 20,000 emails stolen from a breach.

Reuters has revealed that the FBI is investigating an unreported incident involving the DCCC, which could be related to an earlier hack targeting the DNC that led to the infamous leak of some 20,000 emails by WikiLeaks earlier this week.

The DCCC is a body that raises money for Democrats in the running for seats in the US House of Representatives.

The publication’s sources, four people who were familiar with the hack and the investigation revealed that the cyberattack sought to gather information about donors to the Democratic party, rather than an attempt to steal money.

A bogus website was discovered as recently as June, wherein a domain name closely resembling that of the official donation website saw web traffic reach the bogus website instead of the official DCCC website. The sources have stated that the IP address of the site purporting to be the official one bore similarities to one used by Russian state-sponsored hackers allegedly involved in the DNC hack.

It is currently unclear if any data was exposed. Donors are known to submit personal information such as names, email addresses, credit card details and more. It is yet unknown if any of the stolen information was used in other breaches or if any of the stolen data may have contributed to identity theft.

The FBI referred questions relating a possible DCCC attack to a satatement it made on Monday, following the DNC hack. It read:

The FBI is investigating a cyber intrusion involving the DNC and are working to determine the nature and scope of the matter. A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously, and the FBI will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace.
