The Most Malware-Infected Cities in America

An anti-virus firm has revealed statistics to note the highest malware-ridden cities in the United States.

Enigma Software, an antivirus firm has analyzed a total of 150 cities with over 25 million infections caused due to malware strains in between them.

While the figures and claims aren’t to be perceived as fact, Enigma’s analysis brings up a few surprising cities figuring at the top end of the list.

The dubious distinction of being the most malware-ridden city in America goes to Little Rock in Arkansas. As it turns out, the city saw malware infection rates soar to a staggering 1,412 %, or 14 times the average infection rate in the country.

Patrick Morganelli, senior vice president of technology at Enigma said:

It’s interesting to see how the infection rates varies from city to city. For example, the infection rate in Tampa was five times that of the average infection rate in the top 150 cities. St. Louis’ infection rate was nearly four times the average.

Tampa also remained near the top of the list in the 2014 version of the statistics compiled by the firm. The city with the biggest spike in infections per capita was revealed to be Buffalo. The city went from 47th on the overall list in 2014 to 18 on the list in 2015.

Additionally, Morganelli claims there is no real reason to point out why some cities have higher than normal infection rates.

I wish there was an easy way to determine what makes people in one area more susceptible to malware infections.

A theory proposes that an increase in time spent online automatically increases the chances of malware infecting a computer, as is evident in the case of Buffalo. The city experienced a cold start to the New Year, colder than the average monthly temperatures which would’ve meant more people stayed home and went online.
